Day 6 Part 2 - Florence Accademia Gallery

March 16, 2019

This post may seem to be out of order but it's an accurate reflection of our day. We dropped the car off at the Florence airport and took a tram into the center of the city.

We could not check into our B & B until later in the afternoon. Edith really wanted to see the statue of David, so we walked over to the Academia Gallery. We had our backpacks with us and hoped we could check them at the gallery. No such luck, but they didn't mind if we wore them after going through the standard security scan.

The very first sight that greets you is the famous statue by Michelangelo.

Here's the less familiar rear view.

Edith was pretty emotional, seeing David had been a goal of hers for most of her life.

Another famous work is the PietĂ  da Palestrina. It is attributed to Michelangelo but is now believed to have been completed by Niccolò Menghini or Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

This Cesare Mussini painting shows Leonardo Da Vinci near death with Francis I attending.

No truth to the rumour that these statues wake up and party in the middle of the night...

There was no attribution for this cherub, but the photo was too good not to post.

We've already seen the male nudity, so here's a female. This is titled "Penitent Magdalene" by Luigi Pampaloni.

This one is entitled "Love, Vice and Wisdom" by Lorenzo Bartolini. i've included the description as there are three figures involved, which isn't obvious from the photo.

I don't have any information on this work, but it was worth posting.

And finally, the Italian politician Nicholas Machiavelli sculpted by by Lorenzo Bartolini. He looks a little bit like Star Trek's Mr Spock to me.

After leaving the gallery, we still hat time to kill as detailed in the next post.
