Day 7 - Florence Birds and other photos

March 17, 2019

This post is a catch all for the remaining photos not involving art galleries and museums. In hindsight, Edith would have booked one more day here and one less in Rome.

An urban environment like Florence doesn't have much for bird variety so I was happy to discover a possible new species. This bird looks much like the common Eurasian House Sparrow we see in North America, but it has a few subtle differences. It has been named the Italian Sparrow and is currently considered a subspecies of the House Sparrow. It may be also be a hybrid of the House and Spanish Sparrow. We saw it while having lunch at the Uffizi Gallery.

There is debate whether it should be classed as a separate species, or as a subspecies of the House Sparrow. The same debate exists with the Spanish Sparrow.

This is a female Italian Sparrow.

Another female seen later in the day was this Blackbird. As stated in an earlier post, the Eurasian Blackbird is a member of the Thrush family. North American blackbirds are Icterids, not Thrushes.

I took a couple of shots of the Arno River and the Ponte Vecchio. The bridge was constructed in medieval times and still has shops built alongside. Nowadays they are mostly jewellers and other tourist oriented businesses.

Today was St. Patrick's day and we happened upon this gentleman on the streets of Florence. He had the traditional British/Irish teeth (or lack thereof).

This Bistro on the street was very tempting.

One last photo of the Florence Tram, this one goes to the airport.

We couldn't help ourselves and ended up in a couple of more churches. The first was the Santa Maria Novella church.

And to end the day we did a brief tour of the Duomo. We weren't allowed to take photos inside.

Here's Edith taking one last photo of the Duomo. Unfortunately, her tablet died later on the trip so the photo is lost.

The last photo from Florence was taken by Edith (with her camera), a rather unique street sign.

The next morning we'd be on the train heading south for Sorrento.
