Day 9 - Isle of Capri Part 1

March 19, 2019

We woke early and enjoyed a good breakfast provided by Pasquale. He then drove us down to the docks in Sorrento to board a boat for the day trip to Capri.

This was this boat we ended up on. The crew consisted of two men, one a rookie who was being trained by the other man. There were 10 - 12 passengers with some on the forward deck. We were on the stern.

This is the approach to Capri, the  big vessel in the harbour is a regional Ferry.

The island has two townships, Capri and Anacapri. Capri is on the lower part of the island (shown) while Anacapri is up on the mountainside. This photo shows the road up to Anacapri including a scary looking bridge.

This is the crew on our boat, taken from ashore. They may have been getting ready for a run back to the mainland to pick up another group of tourists.

We had the choice to tour Capri first, or go up to Anacapri. We chose the second option. This shot was taken from the bus as we climbed up the mountain. We might have been on from the bridge shown in the earlier photo.

Anacapri is not very big, this map showed the highlights.

There were two churches close by and we had a look at both. We visited #4 first, the Chiesa di Santa Sofia.

It had a nice painting of Pope John Paul II.

Outside the church we were greeted by a friendly resident of Anacapri.

The second church was named Chiesa di San Michele, it had a beautifully decorated floor as captured by Edith.

It had a stunning display behind the altar as well, another shot by Edith.

Upon leaving the church, guess who showed up again?

Capri is known in Greek mythology as the isle of the sirens. This mural in Anacapri celebrates that distinction.

This was quickly forgotten as I heard a bird singing nearby. I tracked down the sound and found this bird singing on a wire.

The climate here is suitable for growing lemons.

At this point we went back to the buis pickup location to travel down to the main center of Capri. That's detailed in the next post.
